Mariko:
“the artist who brings good luck”
Arion, the Winged Horse of Montpellier Created in 2019 by French artist Mariko (Florence Combescure), Arion stands as a contemporary symbol of vitality and movement in the heart of Montpellier, along Avenue Nina Simone in the district of Port Marianne.
Commissioned by CFC Développement, the monumental sculpture brings a sense of lightness and elevation to the urban landscape: a white horse with open wings, crafted in resin and reinforced with a metal structure, finished with a UV-resistant polyurethane coating designed for outdoor permanence.
The narrative behind it:
Mariko was commissioned this sculpture for the entrance of a building owned by the head of the real estate company, who at the time was dealing with some minor financial setbacks.
After the installation of the sculpture, things began to improve for him: he eventually constructed an additional building, and his situation took a positive turn.
With a touch of playful symbolism, Mariko chose to dedicate the work to Arion, the mythical Greek horse, considered a bearer of good fortune.
She gave him his characteristic white color with green mane and tale, sign of hope and resilience for the future.
For this reason, Mariko’s sculpture has come to be regarded as a kind of good-luck umbrella, sculpted as a protective charm and a symbol of prosperous beginnings
