” Venus in Retrograde”
Alea Pinar Du Pre
Alea Pinar Du Pre develops an artistic practice that merges figurative tradition, contemporary imagery and digital sensibility, exploring themes of perception, identity and the construction of the image in the present day.
In the project Venus in Retrograde, a title also connected to the artist’s own biography, Du Pre reinterprets the figure of Venus not as a simple symbol of beauty, but as a complex, conscious and deeply interior force. Femininity is no longer portrayed as a passive image or an ideal to be admired, but as an autonomous and powerful presence capable of redefining its own codes.
This investigation finds one of its most significant expressions in the After the Masters series, in which the artist draws from Renaissance iconography while deliberately deconstructing its harmony, proportions and aesthetic ideals. Through layered surfaces, optical rhythms and luminous chromatic fields, Du Pre transforms the classical Venus into a contemporary icon suspended between historical memory and digital visual culture.
Her female figures do not seek approval, but inhabit the pictorial space with autonomy and intensity. Absorbing the visual logic of the digital world and returning it to the slow, tactile physicality of painting, Du Pre creates a sophisticated visual language in which beauty, identity, desire and perception become tools for questioning the contemporary human condition.
